Hyundai Hope on Wheels announces its annual Run-4-Hope 5k/10k Run-Walk celebrating pediatric cancer awareness month campaign

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Hyundai Cancer Institute at CHOC Children’s Hospital.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA – September 25, 2019 – Hyundai Hope On Wheels® (HHOW), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, will host its annual Run-4-Hope 5K/10k family fun-run on Sunday, September 29th at the Fountain Valley Sports Complex, Fountain Valley, CA. This event is held in support of National Childhood Cancer Awareness month and marks the final stop of a month’s long series of activities dedicated to bringing awareness to pediatric cancer.  Hyundai Hope On Wheels will award $13.2 million to 52 new research grants for pediatric cancer during the month of September alone. This brings total giving to over $160 million in lifetime giving by the organization to pediatric cancer research since 1998.

Proceeds from the 2019 Hyundai Hope On Wheels Run-4-Hope 5K-10K, will benefit the Hyundai Cancer Institute at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). These funds will support efforts in developing innovative research and patient care programs at CHOC. Ms. Amanda Salas, multi-media personality, Los Angeles area journalist and cancer survivor, will serve as this year’s Grand Marshall. Hyundai Hope On Wheels national youth ambassadors Elizabeth Blair (age 13 of Phoenix, AZ) and Carter Gates (age 14 of Colorado Springs, CO) will join the event, along with child cancer survivors from across Orange County.

“The 2019 pediatric cancer awareness campaign with Hyundai Hope On Wheels delivers on our decades-long commitment to supporting the most promising childhood cancer research throughout the nation,” says Bob Nouri, Hyundai Hope On Wheels Board Member, and dealer principal at Huntington Beach Hyundai. “As a Hyundai dealer, our mission is to help children fight cancer and to bring increased awareness to the cause. It is with the endearing support from communities like Orange County and working together, that we are able to support this work.”

The campaign theme for 2019 is “Every Handprint Tells A Story”. Every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer impacting 15,000 new, young lives each year. Childhood cancer remains the leading disease-related cause of death among children. When a child is fighting pediatric cancer, they often miss so many milestones of childhood – the first day of school, a birthday party with friends, a bike ride in the park, a musical recital, or a vacation with family. HHOW recognizes the significance of creating memories that last a lifetime and more importantly, helping children overcome their illness to continue making more of them. There are many handprints in the fight to find a cure. The Run-4-Hope 5K-10K run-walk is a way that everyone in the community can play a part.

“Hyundai is a company that is committed to making the lives of families better,” says Jose Munoz, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. “When a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer, it affects the entire family and his/her extended community. To us this is much more than a marketing campaign, but rather a part of our core-brand values – the care and wellbeing of our neighbors.  We are extremely proud to be a partner in the fight to find more cures for pediatric cancer.“

Hyundai Hope on Wheels returns to Washington, D.C. To host its annual “DC Days” for childhood cancer awareness month

Leading Members of Congress join hands with the organization in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 17, 2019 – Hyundai Hope On Wheels® (HHOW), a 501c(3) non-profit organization, announces its annual Hyundai Hope On Wheels DC Days event in the nation’s Capital on September 18th and 19th. This event is held in conjunction with its Childhood Cancer Awareness Month campaign. During the month, the organization will donate $13.2 million to 52 doctor-researchers to support better treatment options and to improve care for children diagnosed with pediatric cancer. A combined $900,000 in grants will be awarded to 3 DC area children’s hospitals: Georgetown, Lombardi Cancer Institute (Washington, DC), Nation Children’s Medical Center (Washington, D.C.) and Kimmel Cancer Institute Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, MD).

The D.C. Days event is designed to bring together numerous stakeholders – elected officials, policy makers, advocates, doctor-researchers and child-families, and to raise awareness of pediatric cancer. While in town, D.C. Days events will include: 1) local area hospital donation ceremonies; 2) Capitol Hill Reception; 3) National Press Conference; 4) Thought Leader’s Luncheon; 5) Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony, and 6) Community pop-up handprint ceremony. This year in partnership with the DC metro transit authority, over 43 metro buses will be wrapped and 100 metro stations will include digital message regarding pediatric cancer.

“Hyundai is a company that is committed to the well-being, health and safety of families,” says Jose Munoz, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. “The Hyundai Hope On Wheels initiative is among the proudest activities we do in partnership with our U.S. dealers. Children are our future. They deserve every opportunity to succeed. We are honored to be in Washington, D.C. with elected officials, policy makers and the childhood cancer community to bring even greater attention to the cause.”

The Hyundai Hope On Wheels campaign theme for 2019 is Every Handprint Tells A Story. With the sale of every new Hyundai, the company and its dealers donation to pediatric cancer research. In the U.S., 15,000 new cases of pediatric cancer – 44 a day – are diagnosed. While 80% of kids with cancer can be cured, pediatric cancer remains the leading disease-related cause of death among children in the U.S. The DC Days activities brings together various stakeholders – the many handprints, if you will – to identify new opportunities to improve cure and care for children with cancer.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels is one of the largest funders of pediatric cancer research in the nation. Along with grants announced earlier this year, Hyundai Hope On Wheels has awarded over $160 million to pediatric cancer research since 1998. With five (5) different grant categories that range from $100,000 to $2.5 million, grants are awarded exclusively to Children’s Oncology Group members through a competitive peer reviewed process. The Scholar Hope Grant and The Young Investigator grants are awarded during the month of September.

“September Childhood Cancer Awareness month is a special time for the Hyundai dealers across America,” says Scott Fink, Board Chair and Hyundai dealer-owner, Hyundai of New Port Richey (New Port Richey, FL) and Hyundai of Wesley Chapel (Wesley Chapel, FL). “We joined the fight against pediatric cancer in 1998. We are inspired by the courage of children fighting cancer. For so many of these children, they travel an uncertain journey to recovery with bravery despite the difficulties ahead. And for far too many, the battle with the disease is not won. With Hyundai Hope On Wheels, we are committed for as long as it takes to insure every child wins his/her fight with this disease.”

On September 18th and 19th, ten (10) Hope Vehicles will travel throughout D.C. to increase awareness for pediatric cancer month. On Friday, September 20th, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, the public is invited to participate in the signature pop-up handprint celebration, to be held in the Woodrow Wilson Complex at the Ronald Reagan Building. These handprints signify the community’s support to the issue of childhood cancer awareness. In addition, individuals are also encouraged to show their support during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by wearing a gold ribbon all month long. Every Handprint Tells A Story!

Hyundai Hope on Wheels to award $13.2 million new pediatric cancer grants during childhood cancer awareness month

The non-profit embarks on a nationwide tour throughout September to raise awareness and to announce 52 researcher grant winners at children’s hospitals throughout the nation.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA – August 30, 2019 – Hyundai Hope On Wheels® (HHOW), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, supported by Hyundai Motor America and its U.S. dealers, continues its fight against pediatric cancer and announces plans for Childhood Cancer Awareness month. For September, the non-profit organization has selected 52 new grant winners to receive a combined $13.2 million for pediatric cancer research. In addition to grants announced earlier this year, this brings the Hyundai Hope On Wheels donations to pediatric cancer research to just over $160 million in the United States, since 1998.

The September campaign theme for 10th year is Every Handprint Tells A Story. There are 15,000 new cases of pediatric cancer – about 44 children a day – diagnosed in the United States each year. Although 80% of kids with cancer can be cured, pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children. With its Every Handprint Tells A Story campaign, Hyundai Hope On Wheels brings together the many stakeholders – the child, families, doctors, hospitals, advocates, donors, and others – who work to identify new ways to find a cure and improve care for children with battling pediatric cancer. When a child is diagnosed, it not only changes their life, but his/her family and broader communal network.

“Hyundai is an international company with big ideas and a bold vision to make the world better, with a corporate philosophy of Lifetime partner in automobile and beyond,” says Jose Munoz, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. “Key to our vision of a better world is the health, safety, and well-being of children. That’s why for the past 21 years, Hyundai and our U.S. dealers have joined the fight against pediatric cancer. Children are our future; they deserve every opportunity to succeed. We are funding life-saving research, and we are raising more awareness about the importance of the cause with Hyundai Hope On Wheels. Because children deserve to win!”

Hyundai Hope On Wheels is one of the largest funders of pediatric cancer research in the nation. With five (5) different grant categories – ranging from $100,000 to $2.5 million – grants are awarded to Children’s Oncology Group member institutions through a competitive doctor peer reviewed process. The Scholar Hope Grant ($300,000) and The Young Investigator ($200,000) grants are awarded during the month of September. This month, additional donations are made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/The Jimmy Fund Walk of the Boston Marathon (9/22) and The Run-4-Hope 5K-10K run/walk benefiting the Hyundai Cancer Institute at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (9/29).

Every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer. Children deserve to enjoy the simple milestones of childhood like having a birthday party, a first day of school, losing a first tooth, obtain a driver’s license, or get a part-time job. These ordinary milestones of childhood are often missed, when a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer. In its place are times spent confined to a hospital room, countless surgeries, hair loss, needles and medicines, and even loss of limbs. The reality is there is nothing fun about being a kid with cancer. However, there are so many brave and amazing children whose stories of courage, bravery and hope inspires us.

“As the board chair for Hyundai Hope On Wheels, there is no greater joy than for me than to meet the faces of brave pediatric cancer fighters at children’s hospitals across the nation,” says Scott Fink, Board Chair and Hyundai dealer-owner, Hyundai of New Port Richey (New Port Richey, FL) and Hyundai of Wesley Chapel (Wesley Chapel, FL). “These amazing kids embody the word hope. They exemplify all that’s wonderful about childhood, and they show us as adults the courage of facing adversity. The Hyundai dealers of America joined the fight against pediatric cancer in 1998. For so many children fighting the disease, they travel an uncertain journey to recovery. And, sadly, for far too many others, the battle with the disease is not won. With Hyundai Hope On Wheels, will continue this fight to not only survive the disease, but to thrive.”

Returning for a second year, Ms. Elizabeth Blair (age 12 of Phoenix, AZ) and Carter Gates (age 14 of Colorado Springs, CO) served as the 2019 National Youth Ambassadors. Each will travel the country visiting children’s hospitals and attending events to share their unique messages of hope and courage.

Each project is expected to be built with 2,000 can-good items. The can-goods will be added to the overall food drive donation, which will all be donated to Share Our Selves, a non-profit organization that provides over 60,000 meals a year to Orange County residents.  The public is invited to join us by making a donation of can-goods at one of the above locations or directly to Share Our Selves.
